OUR CONDUCTORS
Conductor James Burge
Mr. James Burge received the B.M.E. and M.A. in performance from the University of Denver. After teaching in Denver area schools, he moved to Las Vegas to perform in show bands, backing many of the stars of the ’60s and ’70s. He moved to Orlando for the opening of Walt Disney World where he was a staff musician and assistant conductor of the Walt Disney World Band. While in Orlando, Mr. Burge taught at Seminole and Valencia Community Colleges and performed with the Florida Symphony Orchestra. In 1976, he joined the faculty of Hillsborough Community College and remained there until retiring in 2005. He became the Director of Music at HCC, where he conducted the Wind Ensemble and the Jazz Band among other responsibilities. He is a founding member of the Bay Area Saxophone Quartet and performs in various jazz and show bands around the Tampa Bay area.Co-Conductor Ted M. Hope
Mr. Hope has been affiliated with the Hillsborough County School District since 1984 and served as Director of Bands at Hillsborough High School for 3 years and at Bloomingdale High School for 17 years. Currently, he is the County Supervisor of Middle and Secondary Music. He is a member of the Florida Bandmasters Association where he served as chairman and secretary. Mr. Hope’s professional affiliations include the MENC, Hillsborough County Secondary Music Council, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the Bay Area Saxophone Quartet. Mr. Hope is an active clinician and adjudicator in concert band, jazz ensemble, and marching band.Johnny M. Seay Jr.
Mr. Seay has written over 40 compositions. Among his teachers were: Leonard Bowie, Dr. Harold Harmon, John Ligotti, Dr. J. Coble, Don Owen and Leon Merian (trumpet), Dr. William Weidrich (conducting), James Lewis, Hilton Jones (composition), and Bill Porter (breathing). Mr. Seay has been called upon as an adjudicator and soloist throughout the Midwest, east, and southwest.
Mr. Seay (B. 1947) is a former member of “The United States Army Band (Pershings Own),” where he performed with the Ceremonial Band, Army Blues, U.S. Army Brass Band, Concert Band and Herald Trumpets. Among his proudest moments included the performance of Taps at the Tomb on the Unknowns. He has performed with the Savannah River Brass Quintet, Augusta (GA) Concert Band, Deerfield (IL) Concert Band, Wheaton (IL) Symphony, St. Petersburg (FL) Youth Symphony, and the St Petersburg (FL) Symphony.
